Babyface wanted to write a song using the familiar line 'roses are red, violets are blue.' Co-written with Antonio 'L.A.' Reid, 'Roses Are Red' was first pitched to the Whispers, who chose another one of L.A. and Babyface's songs, 'Rock Steady,' which gave the group a number one R&B/number seven pop hit. The songwriting/production duo passed 'Roses Are Red' to the Mac Band, a Flint, MI-born group based around the vocals of brothers Derrick, Kelvin, Ray, and Charles Campbell. It was one of the smoothest sessions Babyface had ever been a part of, with the group quickly nailing the song's vocal harmonies. Issued as a MCA single from their Mac Band LP, 'Roses Are Red' went to number one R&B in the summer of 1988, while oddly never crossing over to the pop charts. They had two more Top 30 R&B hits with 'Stuck' and 'Someone to Love.' The 'roses are red' line also served as the basis for 'Roses Are Red (My Love),' a 1962 gold number one pop hit by Bobby Vinton.
