Synaptic is a graphical package management program for apt. It provides the same features as the apt-get command line utility with a GUI front-end based on Gtk+. If you prefer using a GUI to install apps in Debian and Debian-based systems (ubuntu, mint, etc) synaptic would make it worthwhile.

On the command terminal (SHORTCUT=> Ctrl+Alt+T), enter:
Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial)was used here. You could grab the binary (.deb) package from here.
After installation you can now use synaptic to install/upgrade/remove any software package you want in your system. Using the search feature you can just type in the name of the software package you want to install and then synaptic would do the search for you and install it along with it dependencies.

Synaptic is a GTK-based graphical user interface for the APTpackage manager used by the DebianLinux distribution and its derivatives.[2] Synaptic is usually used on systems based on deb packages but can also be used on systems based on RPM packages. Usage[edit]
The package manager enables the user to install, to upgrade or to remove software packages. To install or remove a package a user must search or navigate to the package, then mark it for installation or removal. Changes are not applied instantly; the user must first mark all changes and then apply them.

Synaptic development was funded by Conectiva,[3] which asked Alfredo Kojima, then an employee, to write a graphical front-end for APT, continuing the work initiated with the creation of the APT RPM back-end, apt-rpm.
